    Rememberance

    Mansfield Town Centre and the Parade of Remembrance is waiting for the words of command to take the long journey back up hill from St.Peters Church to the Civic Centre.

    The day itself was probably the warmest and most certainly the driest that I ever remember. The turnout was fantastic from the crowds. the band and the parade. I chose this picture just to show the number of people that turned out to parade. In the front is Piper Alex Smith and yes the Police transit is at the back, a long way back. Thank you to every one whom turned up to Honour the fallen.

    There is a theme to my blogs and that is that I was again proud to be the Pipe Major of this band. We played well despite the chill wind and new tunes but we still maintained the tunes and had some great starts and finishes. The band size was great with 5 drummers and 13 Pipers.

    Now the thank you notes. Piper Alex Smith  for carrying the standard and very smart he was to. Piper Sam Wynn for again playing the Bass drum and doing a sterling job. Colin McAlpine for looking smart, Pipe Sergeant Tony Varley for  an excellent rendition of the lament (sorry you missed the cup of Tea) and every other member of the band for attending and putting the effort in to making us look and sound great.

  2. Richard and Martha

    Piper Richard Galloway and his lovely wife Martha celebrated their 50th welling anniversary with family and friends at the council hall in Retford on Saturday 16/10/2010. Where guests where entertained by a ceilidh band. As is our custom the Seaforth Highlanders played during the night as a special treat for Richard and Martha.

    The band played well with some pretty good starts and finishes, the hard work pays off when members of the audience mention it. Keep up the great work.

    There is an apology though, I did not take a camera because my daughter has it, so if you have a good picture of Richard, Martha or the band email it to me please.

    While at Wensleydale this year (2010) something strange happened and it would be remiss of me not to take full advantage of the situation. Just to introduce the guest members from left to right. Alex Wynn (Sam's brother) who stepped in hoodie and all to play, and rather well, the bass drum. Thank you Alex you have got the job. Then of course there is Sam (band mascot)(now known as Jacob out of twilight) who piped and drummed. Thank you Sam. Then there is Mrs Wynn Known to us all as Ellie who has threatened to play the pipes with us for years, and she did and despite her trepidation gave us a good rendition of Amazin' Grace. Thank you Ellie no more excuses he he. By the way it is Sam's mum. So that is most of the family, And of course the last ugly old fart on the end is me.

  4. Wensleydale 2010

    A very good turn out from the band. Thank you all, that were able to attend to give us a good size band, to be again proud of. The weather held out for us really and another enjoyable engagement. It was very tiring with all that drinking and piping for some of us. though every one was playing just not all drinking eh! Stu. Thanks to Ruth for planning the train timetable. The piping was not bad, there were even moments of greatness.


  5. Lowdham School Gala

    What a fine body of men and a lovely picture of our drummers. Yes I would like to announce that we now have a drum corps. I would like to give a special mention to Aaron who made his first appearance out with the Band today (He is the good looking one on the left)
    To day we lead the parade for the C of E primary school at lowdham. The children dressed up as "children from all over the world". It was fantastic to see so many involved, It looked like the whole village was there.
    Thank you people of Lowdham for the appreciation and hospitality you showed to us.

  6. Feature on Drummers

    Welcome to Mark who has now come out with us on a warm summer's day.  There have been comments as to why there are never any pictures of drummers on our website, so I have taken this opportunity to do just that.  The real reason is that they are always at the back and I resist any further comments on this matter.  Ian, the lesser in stature gentleman on the right, has been in the band for a number of years and has been heard to say that he was as tall as Mark when he started.

    Probably the hottest day in the world...ever, especially when you are doing a 25 minute march.  It doesn't sound very much, but it does lose you about three stone in sweat.  Yet again another good turnout by the band; we can boast 11 pipers and three drummers and I haven't counted Sam twice who played the base drum on the march and the pipes in the field display.  Thank you to you all for giving up your Saturday. 
     
    Nicely organised event, the parade setting off at 11.30am  reaching the field just short of 12pm.  The weather being so good and so hot, the crowd at the event was probably the largest I have ever seen, and I hope that everyone made as much money as did the ice-cream seller.  It was great to see the memorial fly-past again;  one of the event organisers must be very well connected...
     
    I was really pleased to see Geoff back on the base drum after quite a long absence - we missed you mate, welcome home (you may get the job again permanently).
     
    A special mention goes to Colin, who has only been with us for a short time.  Colin, you made us all smile when you performed an almost perfect pirouette forming the circle.  For your first live performance with the band, you mastered the art of marching and playing at the same time, so I would  like to say exceptionally well done!



  8. Stu's birthday

    Pipe Sergeant Gullen is 60 years young officially, now he has had his party at the Debdale Lane Social Club Saturday 22nd May  2010. It was a great party - why - Fantastic food, great venue, good company and terrific music. Thank you Stu and "Happy Birthday"
